News from Camp

Camp Ronald McDonald at Eagle Lake is coming to an end, but what a summer it has been! These last few weeks have been especially exciting. Camp Signshine held their 34th year of Camp for the Deaf, hard of hearing and children and siblings of the deaf and hard of hearing! Campers climbed a rock wall, made sun spinners and participated in the traditional Indian Day activities. Their counselor's in training enjoyed a beach day and hiking on the Bizz Johnson trail.

Hanot Foundation continued with their 10th year of residential summer camp for adults with developmental disabilities. It was a fun filled week of Bingo, Open Mic Night, 50's Dance and Casino Night.

Lassen County Kids 2009 hosted 60 local campers and 25 volunteer counselors. It was an excellent week filled with Olympic Day, Parents Night, Counselor Hunt and Dance/Casino night!

Easter Seals are finishing up the season with an eight day camping session for young adults with developmental and physical challenges. We have a great week planned of High School Competition with such activities as a Prom Formal Dance, WWF Wrestling, Casino Night & Floor Show as well as the BEST TALENT SHOW EVER!!!

Thank you so much to everyone that supports Camp Ronald McDonald at Eagle Lake! We will see everyone again next year!

A Special Thank You

On July 24th the local Mexican Consulate hosted a "Taquizas" lunch for all of the families staying at the House as well as many children from Shriners Hospitals for Children. Live music was performed out on the patio while families enjoyed the delicious food and the great company. Thanks to the Mexican Consulate for their on-going contributions to the house of food donations and lunches.

Last month Brand Source donated four new dishwashers to be installed in the two large housing buildings currently on site. Because so many families share a kitchen, our aging appliances desperately needed to be replaced. These new dishwashers are greatly appreciated by the families as well as the staff here at the Sacramento Ronald McDonald House.

Auction Items Needed

The 13th Annual RMHC Golf Classic is being held on Monday, August 31st and we are looking forward to another successful year. This day-long golf event also includes a silent auction and we are hoping to provide tons of fabulous items for our golfers to bid on. Gift certificates, golf-related items, trips, wine, sports memorabilia, spa packages, etc. are especially sought-after items. Do you work for a business that might be willing to donate? Or do you frequent a local store or restaurant that would want to help out? Your donation will be recognized in the event program and also on the RMHC website. Volunteers in Action

Tom O'Neill volunteered for a total of 60 hours repairing broken pipes and sprinkler heads on the Ronald McDonald House property. Despite the hot July weather, Tom was able to make all of the repairs by himself and now the entire sprinkler system is up and running smoothly.

Volunteers from Ernst & Young participated in an Odd Job Work Party on July 17th. In just a few short hours these wonderful volunteers cleaned and repaired playground toys, removed cobwebs from all of the exterior fixtures, cleaned out ovens, planted new plants and much more.

Lindsey Peabody, an intern from Rio Americanos High School, volunteered 80 hours as part of her internship here at the Ronald McDonald House. Lindsey helped out in many ways including filing, cleaning and organizing many of our storage closests. It was really great having an extra pair of hands to help with the many things that have to get done every day.

Video Product Distributors joined us for two to Odd Job Work Parties in recent weeks. Volunteers baked cookies, scrubbed toys, organized and cleaned out kitchen cupboards as well as our many high chairs. What a wonderful team effort!

Outdoor Work Party volunteers continue to amaze us! Each month individuals come out on the second Saturday of the month to pull weeds, trim bushes, clean playground equipment and the like. July saw nearly 65 volunteers sprucing up the House grounds!
