Everybody Needs A Hero

Hayden’s Story

It was just two weeks after our son Hayden’s first birthday that we were given the devastating news. On March 23, 2014 Hayden was diagnosed with high-risk Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. As parents when those four life changing words “Your child has CANCER” are said, your whole world as you know it falls apart. From day one the chemotherapy treatment Hayden has endured to battle his cancer has made his body weak, has given him discomfort, and frequently has made him physically sick, but one thing the cancer and chemotherapy hasn’t taken away is his precious smile and his love for life.

Through all of this he has been so strong, stronger than most adults I know, and stronger than I could ever be. We can only attribute this strength to the amazing care he has received from not only his team of doctors and medical staff at UC Davis Children’s Hospital & Pediatric Cancer Center, but also the loving and supportive staff from the Northern California Ronald McDonald House. Since Hayden’s diagnosis we have proudly called the Ronald McDonald House “Our home away from home!” Hayden is just over two years old now and only knows all the extended stays, hospital visits, treatments, and staying at the Ronald McDonald House is his NORMAL. Hayden learned how to walk at the RMH, he’s potty training at the RMH, he’s talking more than ever, and it all started at the RMH on April 20, 2014. On that day Steve and I were greeted with a welcome and a smile. After checking in I was brought to tears when we were given a handmade blanket and a toy for Hayden. The little things like this make a huge impact on families, I know it did on ours. We hold this place close to our hearts and will forever be grateful for the staffs love, kindness and support thus far through our journey.

And although we have a long road ahead with Hayden’s treatment we are confident that by taking one day at a time we will get through this, we will beat this together. Hayden’s last day of treatment is July 15, 2017, a day to truly celebrate!
